At Carpet World, we’ve heard all about flooring installation “challenges.” We imagine excuses are heard all over the country from Fort Worth to Philadelphia, ranging from “I want to save money” to “How hard can it be to install. After all, you just place it on top, right?” (NOTE: Actually, no, you can’t just place it on top.)
1. Time. Wouldn’t it be nice if every room was a perfect square, and we wouldn’t have to deal with baseboards, moldings or closets? Well, they aren’t, and we can get really confused trying to install a rug around them, and there’ll be a lot of time wasted while we try to figure it out.
The professional is trained to know just what to do, so do yourself a favor and hire him or her.
2. Tools. Do you know what a knee-kicker is? How about a loop cutter or a seam roller? These are just some of the things most lay people wouldn’t know how to use, but the biggest reason not to buy them might be that you’ll spend more money; while professionals use them frequently, they buy wholesale. You’ll buy retail, and then probably never use them again.
3. Warranty. Did you know that most manufacturers have an installation clause in their warranties? They state that unless carpets are installed per their specifications, any damages, even those not the fault of the homeowner, will not be covered.
What about hardwood? Will that flooring be an easier installation?
Not really. Wood floors also require special tools and skills, and there might be some subfloor prep work involved.
Both rugs and wood run neck-to-neck in popularity for flooring, so it will really come down to your lifestyle.
