Preventing it is a tough challenge for humid climates. Mold can create damage to your personal property. It also creates health problems and will trigger allergic reactions and asthma.
The first thing you should do, is to decrease the possibility of mold spores entering your home. That’d be easier said than done. They are all over the place, and it certainly loves carpet, Dallas.
So make it as hard as possible for it to get in by:
1. Having people remove their shoes before entering. Moisture gets in soil, and damp soil can be tracked in on shoes. Keep mats or area rugs by entrances, so people can wipe their feet.
2. Have good air circulation. Mold spores grow in stale air, so keep windows open. If possible, establish cross ventilation and use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom.
3. Use air conditioners and dehumidifiers to control your home’s climate. Mold flourishes when there’s condensation, so keep the temperature in the house slightly higher than the humidity level.
4. Establish a schedule of frequent cleaning. Dust and dirt is “food” for mold spores, and the spores need food as well as the right temperature and moisture. When you clean, you’re not only getting rid of the food, but also the spores themselves.
