Think About Resale
Let’s ask you a question, Dallas. Are you planning to sell your house anytime soon?
If you answered yes to this question, you would probably want a wood flooring installation. Various surveys, not only of real estate sales professionals, but also of industry organizations, such the Wood Flooring Association, indicate that people will often pay as much as 20 percent over the asking price for a house with these floors.
If that’s not possible, however, you should have a new carpet installation because, while it won’t really add value, it will make your home more appealing, and anyone who’s ever watched those real estate reality shows knows that it’s all about the staging!
How Long Will it Last?
Dallas, here’s something else you need to think about. We’ve heard about some wood floors that have lasted for 100 years. Of course, the homeowner took good care of them, not letting them be exposed to excess water (which can cause warping), refinishing when necessary, using mats where needed, and more.
A lot of manufacturers will say that a carpet installation lasts 10 years, but we know people (including the writer of this post) who had it for almost 20 years. And the homeowners took exceptional care of this soft surface, including daily vacuuming and regular, professional, steam cleaning, because, like anything else, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last.
Although some things, like shedding, are easy fixes. If you find yourself frequently moving furniture around to cover stains, or if it smells, looks worn and has stains even on the padding, it’s time for a replacement.
